Years after retiring from the sport, Roger Federer has decided to come back. Although it’s not what you think, quite literally. The Swiss Maestro isn’t hopping back on the Tour but instead, he is returning to apologize to a certain Spanish 3-time Grand Slam champion. While apologizing to fans for depriving them of his on-court spectacles is a stretch, his actual task is quite daunting. The question is, will his apology be accepted? After all, Federer did initiate the situation leading to the hilarious circumstances in the first place.
A true master at his craft, Federer unfortunately had to close his two-decade-long chapter at the Laver Cup in 2022. After an emotional farewell, the Swiss superstar has occupied himself with numerous ventures. While some lead to his brand promotions and touring, others pertain to on-court commitments. Among them, his appearance at the upcoming Laver Cup in Berlin, scheduled to commence on September 20, is at the top. With Team Europe and Team USA all set to battle, Federer was intrigued to provide insight. However, what needs more attention is his sincere apology to Carlos Alcaraz.
Talking to the event’s official website, Federer explained that he was looking forward to meeting and greeting Alcaraz. Moreover, the Swiss Maestro highlighted an amusing incident in which he crossed paths with the 21-year-old during his early years at Wimbledon in 2019. Acknowledging his hilarious misdemeanor and, naturally, Alcaraz’s rise in the sport, Federer amusingly vowed to apologize to the Spaniard at the Laver Cup.

He said, “I barely know Carlos Alcaraz so I’m excited to see him play for the very first time. I only practiced once with him at Wimbledon when he was still a junior, and then the next day, my coach said, ‘Do you want to warm up with him again?’ and I said, ‘No, it’s okay, I’d rather warm up with his coach, who was my generation, Juan Carlos Ferrero.’ I can apologize to Carlos this week.”

While the duo has some catching up to do, with the sport’s young blood taking notes from one of its finest assets, Federer will likely feel a bit off. There’s a good reason for that. After all, the 43-year-old’s closest friend won’t be joining him at the highly anticipated event.
Roger Federer to be deprived of Rafael Nadal’s presence at Laver Cup
Battling against all odds and injury concerns, Rafael Nadal returned to the Tour this season. However, his efforts bore no fruit as the Spanish legend was unable to capitalize on his formidable form. It couldn’t be restored. Instead, Rafa’s dropped form has taken a toll on his morale. As a result, the former World No. 1 has withdrawn from the Laver Cup.

In an official statement, Nadal confirmed his withdrawal, saying, “I’m disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week. This is a team competition and to support Team Europe, I need to do what’s best for them and at this moment there are other players who can help the team deliver the win.”
This means that his arch-nemesis and close friend, Roger Federer, will have to attend the event without Nadal. A disappointing update, but the Swiss legend’s return is bound to excite fans.
