With a flawless record in Majors in 2022, Rafael Nadal, the 22-time Major champion, faced Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round of the US Open. Whereas, the 36-year-old appeared committed to winning the year’s final Grand Slam. Tiafoe had previously lost to Nadal twice, each time in straight sets: 3-0 in the 2019 Australian Open and 2-0 at the 2019 Madrid Open.

On the grand stage, the Spaniard was going for his 23rd straight triumph, but the home favorite had other ideas. Tiafoe beat Nadal 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in three hours and 34 minutes to reach the quarterfinals.

The possibility of Tiafoe becoming the first American to win the US Open in 19 years has so been maintained. Frances played brave and aggressive tennis to earn a historic victory at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, outscoring Rafa by 10 points.
