Boris Becker has been serving a jail term since April after losing a legal battle over allegations of evading debts. He received massive backlash for tarnishing the sport’s name. However, there are many who still sympathize with the German and want to connect on a human level. One of them is John McEnroe.

The veteran, while speaking to the press at the Wimbledon championships this year, expressed his will to meet Becker. He shared his take on the entire matter and his feeling regarding the six times Grand Slam champion’s current state.

What John McEnroe thinks of Becker and his current situation

The former World no.1, who became close friends with Becker while providing broadcasting services to the BBC, said. “Boris is a friend of mine. This is just horrible. I want to see him if I possibly can, if he’s willing to see people or can.”

Thereafter the seven-time Grand Slam champion added, “I just feel terrible. He’s been going through a lot for a long time. He kept telling me it’s going to be OK, it’s under control. That’s Boris. He was just a very confident player on the court.”

“But sometimes you’re not necessarily a great investor. You don’t take care of your money off the court as well.” The three-time Wimbledon champion is currently serving a two and half year sentence in the HMP Huntercombe in Oxfordshire, England. He was found guilty of hiding a sum of 3.1 million dollars.

Thereafter, in 2017, he declared bankruptcy and evaded around 60 million dollars worth of creditors’ money. Therefore, in the digging of 2022 at the Southwark Crown Court trail, he received removal of property, two counts of failing to disclose estate, and concealing debt charges.

McEnroe against Becker

The seven-time Grand Slam champion locked horns with the fallen star 10 times during his playing days. They first squared off in 1985 at the carpet court of Italy and McEnroe was the one who came out victorious. However, by the end of their careers, Becker came out on top eight times in total.

The only other time the American was able to outdo his game was in 1992. The two times champion incurred a round of 32 defeat against McEnroe at the Australian Open that season. Further, their last encounter was also on the carpet, but this time Becker was at the winning end.
