Is Andrey Rublev's aggression ruining his chances of becoming a top-tier tennis player?

Andrey Rublev has had a topsy-turvy season. He started his year with a win at the Hong Kong Open and made it to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. And then carried his streak of satisfactory performances till the Dubai Tennis Championships. However, things took a downward trend for the Russian star after Dubai, as he failed to get back on the winning track for a long time, and his frustration at the Wimbledon championships became one of the highlights of the season. As the season nears the end, the former pro, Jack Sock, thinks that Rublev might not make it to the end of the season tournament.

Andrey Rublev has experienced both highs and lows throughout the season. And at the end, the World No.6 might be eyeing a place in the ATP finals tournament which would feature the top 8 players. However, Rublev’s position at the year-end tournament might be hanging in the balance. During the podcast Nothing Major on September 27th, Sock, along with Stevie Johnson, Sam, and John, while discussing the Asian swing in detail, had something to say about the Russian star.

After the Asian swing, the ATP finals would be the next big tournament. And while discussing the players who would make it to the tournament, Sock asked whether “one of the current guys in the top eight is going to miss out?” The former ATP pro specifically mentioned 3 names in the list, “(Casper) Ruud, Rublev, (Alex) De Minaur,” to choose from before rephrasing his question to, “Which one of those three is not making the year-end Final?”

In response to that, Johnson picked Rublev as someone who could miss out. Sharing his reason for it, he said, “I think he just goes crazy again and just loses, like, four first rounds, yeah. I mean, like he’s either gonna title two tournaments, or he’s gonna lose four first rounds, like there’s no in between.” Johnson based his pick on the basis of Rublev’s unpredictability throughout the season. After winning the Hong Kong Open, Rublev claimed his 2nd title at the Madrid Open, after a few first-round exits and a few quarterfinals appearances. However, at Wimbledon, he suffered an early exit again.

The Wimbledon Championships certainly highlighted Rublev’s frustration. After suffering first-round exit, he punished himself by hitting his knees 5 times. However, he found his rhythm once again at the Canadian Open and made it to the finals of the tournament. Because of Rublev’s inconsistency though, Johnson picked him as someone who would miss out, but there is a catch!

Novak Djokovic’s hurdle for Andrey Rublev and others to make it to the ATP final

Johnson remarked, “For sure, one of the guys is gonna drop out because Novak is getting in.” It’s possible that Novak Djokovic won’t make it to the ATP finals, as the Serb earlier declared that he would want to prioritize the tournaments he wants to play in. However, according to Johnson and others, the chances of Djokovic coming back at the ATP finals are relatively high.

Johnson further said, “Serbia is in the final of the Davis Cup, so I think he will end up for sure. If he doesn’t play anything else. He didn’t play in Beijing. If he is there, he is a top 3 favorite, even though he has not played for the last 6 months.”

Well, all eyes seem to be on the Serbian ace for his decision. If he decides to go to the ATP finals, one of Ruud, Rublev, or De Minur will miss out. What do you think though? Would Rublev make it to the ATP finals or not? Let us know in the comments.
