Was Djokovic's Wimbledon final a snooze-fest, or are critics just being too harsh on his style?

Novak Djokovic would have anticipated that his miracle run till the finals might conclude into a miracle 8th Grand Slam. However, Carlos Alcaraz beautifully denied the Serb his 8th Grass Slam in straight sets. It’s a perfect repeat of last year’s Wimbledon final, with one exception: Last year, Djokovic put up a strong fight. It was anybody’s game till the last moment; an exciting 5-set thriller coronation for the Spaniard. But this year, there were no surprises from the get-go as ‘King’ Alcaraz eased into his throne, a reality check for Djokovic, but a snooze fest for this journalist.

It was one of the most expensive final battles at Wimbledon yesterday. A seat costing as high as $10k! Though ardent tennis fans would have scoured every penny to buy it. However, to amass this huge amount for a live show is impossible for many. In addition to these tennis enthusiast, there were some, like the journalist Émilie, who prefer to watch the re-match in the comforts of their home. And catching a nap in-between!

In her Instagram story, Émilie shared her thoughts, calling the rematch “the boring final of all time.” She said, “Well, I’m glad I didn’t waste a cent or more than 30 minutes of my time watching that snooze fest. The real men’s singles finals of Wimbledon this year were Medvedev vs Sinner and Medvedev vs Alcaraz. Congrats to Carlitos!” Certainly when the ticket prices are touching the sky, and inflation is roaring in the UK, if someone is watching live, they would have anticipated a powerful response from the Serb. But a slow response gave the journalist time to catch up on her sleep!

It wasn’t a thrilling contest, as Alcaraz successfully defended his Wimbledon glory. Meanwhile, for Djokovic, it was a reality check. Just 40 days after his surgery, he played finals on the grass court, against the fit, young, and hot favorite Spaniard. And in a shocking yet not surprising turn of events, Djokovic was unable to keep up with the game of his opponent throughout the final. Maybe age caught up, or his recovery was incomplete, or lack of motivation. It could be anything but the former World No.1 was unable to keep up with the younger generation.

While Daniil Medvedev took the challenge of the upcoming generation (Sinner and Alcaraz) head on. While he got past Sinner’s threat, Alcaraz took him for a ride and a controversy, as he defeated the Russian to set up the summit clash with the Serb. However, despite coming out on top, the Spaniard still feels there is more to come, and it would take a lot to sit at the table where the Big 3 regularly visits.

Carlos Alcaraz stays humble during big wins as he wishes a place at the “big table”

Despite setting the grass court on fire with his terrific display, Alcaraz thinks that more is needed to sit beside the Big 3. At the age of 21 years and 70 days, Alcaraz already has 4 Grand Slam in his kit. But what is more fascinating about his major wins is the fact that he has won a Grand Slam on each surface: Clay, Hard, and Grass court. Maybe that’s why most of the tennis circuit thinks that he has the best qualities of all the Big 3. But for Alcaraz, it’s just 4 in front of Djokovic’s 24, Nadal’s 22, and Federer’s 20 Grand Slam.

What’s your perspective on:

Was Djokovic's Wimbledon final a snooze-fest, or are critics just being too harsh on his style?

Have an interesting take?

He said, “I consider champions the big guys who’ve won 15, 14, 20 grand slams. Those guys who are eating at the big table. I want to be there one day. Hopefully, one day I can sit close to these champions.” Alcaraz already has big wins in his pocket and is the favorite to win upcoming slams, except when Sinner spoils the party for him.

If things go well, the humbly hot Carlos Alcaraz is all set to take over the baton from Big 3 as they reserve a seat for him to join. Until then, it may be boring matches for some, when he dominates the court!
