Carlos Alcaraz's outburst: justified passion or over-the-top reaction? What's your take on the China Open drama?

It seems that Carlos Alcaraz can hardly catch a breath! The Spaniard jumped into the Asian swing with a hope of redemption from his second-round exit in the US Open (where he clinched the title in 2022). But even after having a strong start in the China Open, by defeating Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the opening round, Alcaraz found himself in a controversy mid-match. Carlitos protested on-court after receiving two time violations. And Carlitos’ fans are not the ones to shy away!

Alcaraz won the first set against Perricard at the China Open after 44 minutes of play. Despite being given two time violations and losing his serve, Alcaraz rallied from being down 0-40 to win every point on his second serve and gain a foothold in the contest. After winning the set 6-4, Alcaraz expressed his frustration with the umpire warnings. The renowned tennis journalist, Jose Morgado, shared the conversation between Alcaraz and the chair umpire on his X account:

Nevertheless, Alcaraz finished the match, towering over the 21-year-old French player with a score of 6-4, 6-4. However, fans noticed it all and have now shared their disapproval of the whole situation!

Fans react to Carlos Alcaraz’s angry outburst in the China Open

Surprisingly, during his 2024 French Open campaign, where he eventually emerged victorious, Carlos Alcaraz complained about court conditions to the chair umpire, saying, “This is unbelievable. It’s not a clay court, it’s a hard court. No clay here,” during his matchup against Alexander Zverev. However, it seems that his misery doesn’t seem to end even in the China Open. One fan, pointing out the unfair judgement of the umpire, wrote on X, “He was JUST handed the ball?? Giving him time violation is unreasonable here.”

Another fan wrote, “this automated shot clock is not a good idea. Carlos is not even known as a player that takes a long time, like he said…. don’t know what the ATP were thinking with this.” After his shocking Queen’s Club defeat to Jack Draper, the Spaniard clearly shared his disapproval on the trial of a shot clock to tennis,

“I think for the player it is something bad; I mean, I finish the point at the net, and I had no time to ask for the balls. I mean, I’m not saying to go to a towel and taking my time.” He further called it “crazy” and how he finds it difficult to ask for balls after a point. And with the same technology being applied in Beijing, ultimately resulting in getting time violations, understandably, Alcaraz’s frustration grew even more.

Even during the Cincinnati Open this year, Carlos Alcaraz’s angry outburst caught fans’ attention when he smashed his racquet a number of times during his match against Gael Monfils, which he eventually lost. Later on, he admitted, “I felt like it was the worst match that I’ve ever played in my career.” However, this time, even after having an outburst, he managed to secure a victory and is now all ready to face Tallon Griekspoor in the next round. However, fans are not happy with the unfortunate scenario that unfolded in the match. One fan said:

One fan simply wrote, “And he was right.” In the past, Carlos Alcaraz has himself admitted “I try to be friendly, warm, get on with everyone. It’s more important to be a good person than anything else. At the end of my career, I’d like people to remember me, more than as a tennis player, as someone with good values.” Besides, other players like Roberto Bautista Agut, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina have also vouched for Alcaraz’s humility and kindness. Therefore, his outbursts on-court come as a shock to fans and the tennis world!

“That was some b-llsh-t. For real,” wrote one fan in anger on X. However, after a disappointing streak of early-round exits after winning the Wimbledon championships, Alcaraz is ready to move past the unfortunate scenes in Beijing, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals last year. And as he cools down after this recent incident, hopefully we will get to see him ruling the tennis courts once again in the next match!
