Is the USTA failing our young tennis talents while Italy's Jannik Sinner shines on the global stage?

Talk about the standout players in men’s tennis this season and the name of Jannik Sinner will definitely top your list. Such has been the year for the Italian star as he dominated his opponents in the tournaments this season. Earlier this year, Sinner went on to win his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and even achieved the World Number 1 ranking. As if this wasn’t enough, Sinner blew away his American opponents at the ongoing US Open. Seeing his rapid rise, American tennis legend, John McEnroe made an appeal to the United States’ tennis body, the USTA.

Sinner had defeated two American players back-to-back at the US Open. His first victim was Mackenzie McDonald in the opening round, who lost to him in 4 sets, 6-2, 2-6, 1-6, 2-6. Alex Michelsen was the unfortunate player to face him next, and Sinner won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.

Watching his amazing performance, McEnroe was left spellbound while donning the role of a commentator. The American legend took to social media and made a plea to the USTA, saying, “We have to have more of that in the States.”

Most of the lower-rung events like the Challengers take place on European soil, especially in Italy. As a result, the local players there can have better opportunities at these tournaments while also saving on transportation costs. However, Sinner hasn’t been the only one from emerging Italian stars, with players like Lorenzo Musetti and Jasmine Paolini also making it big. Thus, McEnroe feels that it is the right time for the country to expand its footprint.

The Italian star revealed, “I am very happy to get through, he is a very tough opponent. We had a match in Cincinnati one week ago, so I knew a little what to expect. I always love New York, the first Grand Slam I played in the main draw, so I have great memories and I always enjoy playing here.”

Sinner’s best performance at the US Open was a quarterfinal finish a couple of years ago. However, with form on his side, the Italian star doesn’t intend to stop just at this. His third-round opponent will be Christopher O’Connell and it promises to be a thrilling encounter for neutral fans.
