John McEnroe has been the captain of Team World since the inaugural edition of the Laver Cup in Prague in 2017. He led the team to their first title triumph in 2022 and then defended their victory in 2023. This tournament brings a team sport format to tennis and the captains have a role in team selection, building team spirit and even providing in-match coaching, unlike the other tournaments in tennis.

Last year, John McEnroe opened up about how he approached the Laver Cup’s captaining duties. He said, “Well, almost every guy here has a coach with him or is speaking to a coach. So you try to understand what makes a guy tick and talk to the people around him, as well. Get feedback from the coach and people and what they are thinking. That’s important.

He further went on to add “I’m not going to walk in, couple days, and say, This is what you’re going to do.” John McEnroe takes his job very seriously, but he downplays its importance.
