The tennis world is no stranger to surprises, but this one has left fans and players alike doing double takes. Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray—two fierce rivals with a history of epic showdowns— stunned everyone by announcing a strategic partnership! The two legends, who’ve clashed countless times on the court, are now teaming up off it, and the buzz surrounding this unexpected alliance just refuses to die down. And now, adding his signature flair to the conversation is none other than former tennis legend and commentator extraordinaire, John McEnroe.
The former American tennis player engaged in an interaction with Andy Roddick on the December 17th episode of Served with Roddick podcast and deliberated on a wide range of topics ranging from his own career on the circuits to the evolution of the sport over the years. He also opened up on the partnership between Murray and Djokovic and made his thoughts clear. McEnroe highlighted that while he was quite happy over the alliance, it came as a surprise for him too, and predicted that it is unlikely for this partnership to last long enough.
Speaking in the interview, the 65-year-old lauded Murray’s brilliance and said, “Murray is an incredible player he won three major he’s been in 11 Grand Slam finals he’s one of the best players.” He also highlighted his thoughts on the partnership and shared, “I’m happy.” However, he made a surprising prediction claiming that the partnership might not be for a very long time. “I mean I’m sure this is going to be extremely short-lived,” McEnroe added. But despite this, he believes that the partnership will help bring a new form of enthusiasm to the sport and its fans worldwide.

“I just you know for tennis just the interest you know that it brings to it hopefully around the world. I’m hopeful that in a way I hope that Djokovic wins it because it would you know give Murray a little bit he needs some more positive vibes. He certainly knows Novak and they’re both training exceptionally hard and Novak’s always like thinking a step ahead of everyone you know coming up with these crazy ideas,” McEnroe said further in the interview.
Remember, it was on November 23rd when the Serbian tennis star announced that Murray would be coaching him at least till the end of the Australian Open next year and expressed his excitement. Similar sentiments were shared by Murray as well who shared his happiness in being on the same side of the net with Nole for the Grand Slam. However, McEnroe’s statement highlights both, the ups and downs that the partnership might witness. And interestingly, McEnroe is not the only person to have shared such remarks.
Earlier, former British player Greg Rusedski made a skeptical take sharing that the partnership can have both positive and negative impacts. “Novak Djokovic coached by Andy Murray is going to be fascinating to watch the player coach relationship. Andy is a great tactician, knows all the current player’s strengths & weaknesses,” he wrote on X adding, “This could be an inspired choice or will it be a clash of personalities? Intriguing,”. But amidst the skepticism that has been witnessed recently, Novak Djokovic is confident of his new partnership and is excited to play under his guidance.
