ATP number-one Jannik Sinner can’t escape his ordeal despite winning his career’s second Grand Slam in the Big Apple. Known for his humble attitude and sincere perspectives about tennis, Sinner’s failure in the doping trial came as a shock to many. While some from the tennis fraternity sided with Sinner’s side of the story, journalist Ben Rothenberg joined Nick Kyrgios’ league. He offered his fresh perspective, revealing why he is not so fond of Sinner’s US Open win after his ordeal.

Rothenberg confirmed through his recent statement that he is still unsupportive of Jannik Sinner’s handling of the doping trial. In fact, he also took a dig at the ATP for their measures with the Italian player. Sinner tested positive for Clostebol in March, yet he performed in the Indian Wells tournament. Referring to how Roxadustat’s presence jeopardized Simona Halep’s career, Rothenberg pointed out ATP’s partial behavior toward the world’s current number-one player.

I think Jannik was treated like a VIP. It’s very obvious. He could have quickly appealed the initial ban and played in silence. This is the most “striking” part of this case. When it finally came to light, his case was very precise and full of details that removed the blame from him. He also got a minimal penalty for it,” Rothenberg said, highlighting how Sinner could spare his media scrutiny despite failing the doping test not once but twice. He revealed how Sinner’s story seemed too perfect.

Rothenberg also tweeted his thoughts when Sinner received the trophy for the 2024 US Open. The Italian’s confidence at the ESPN desk and trophy ceremony surprised the journalist, given that the Italian is attracting more spotlight for his doping test failure. Along with Rothenberg, Aussie tennis player Nick Kyrgios dropped a similar reaction. “You get tested twice with a banned (steroid) substance… you should be gone for 2 years. Your performance was enhanced. Massage cream…. Yeah, nice,” he said, highlighting Rothenberg’s comment about how Sinner’s treatment is like the VIPs.

Despite Jannik Sinner’s poised answer, his mind was filled with thoughts and emotions after his doping trial failure was circulated in the media. Speaking about how this Grand Slam win meant to him and his team, Sinner said, “Obviously it was very difficult for me to enjoy certain moments. Also how I behaved or how I walked on the court in certain tournaments before, it was not the same as I used to be, so whoever knows me better, they know that something was wrong.”
