Did anyone dominate the tennis courts in 2024 more than Jannik Sinner? The 23-year-old Italian had a season to remember, claiming the Australian Open and US Open titles, leading Italy to Davis Cup glory, and wrapping up the year with an ATP Finals win as World No.1. But even with a trophy-laden season, controversy found him. Sinner’s year ended on a complicated note as he faced doping allegations, with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealing his case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The World No.1’s case revolves around two positive tests for clostebol, an anabolic steroid, during the ATP Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells in March 2024. He explained that the substance entered his system accidentally through his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi. Naldi had used Trofodermin, an over-the-counter spray, to treat a cut on his finger and then gave Sinner a massage without gloves, resulting in contamination. Despite the independent tribunal clearing Sinner of “No Fault or Negligence” based on scientific evidence, WADA was not convinced. They filed an appeal in September 2024, seeking a suspension of one to two years. Now, CAS will possibly hear the case in early 2025.

Karen Moorhouse, CEO of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), has shed light on the potential penalties Sinner could face. Speaking to Tennis365, she explained the complexity of the case and how it differs from other doping incidents. She said, “If you test positive for a prohibited substance, the starting point for a possible disqualification is four years. If it can be proven that it was not intentional, the sentence is reduced to two years. At this point, some differentiations must be made.”

“In the case of Swiatek, we are talking about a contaminated product (medicine), while for Sinner there is the complication that his is an uncontaminated product, as the physiotherapist used the product in question that contained the doping active ingredient on his finger. For this reason, the interval of disqualification goes from one to two years,” Moorehouse further added.

While Sinner’s team has compelling evidence to support his claim of accidental contamination, the stakes are high. The ITIA’s original verdict in his favor strengthens his argument. Their acceptance of the explanation and supporting evidence, such as interviews with Naldi, shows that the tribunal believed in Sinner’s innocence.

However, sports doping cases operate under strict liability, where athletes are held responsible regardless of intent. WADA’s decision to appeal and push for a ban suggests they see enough evidence to warrant a suspension. The outcome remains uncertain as CAS prepares to rule on the matter tentatively after the Australian Open.

Till then, the Italian tennis sensation will be focusing on defending his Australian Open title.
