Jannik Sinner has always been a breath of fresh air in the tennis world. He is a player who combines raw talent with an unshakeable calm that has won him admirers from all corners. His rise through the ranks has been as much about his ice-cool demeanor as it has been about his powerful forehands and strategic brilliance. But even the steadiest ships can be rocked by turbulent seas, and Sinner recently found himself navigating some choppy waters at the Cincinnati Masters.

Playing against Andy Rublev in the quarterfinal of the Cincinnati Open, the World No. 1 seemed to be agitated. While he began his campaign sensationally in the tournament, he struggled to keep the upper hand against Rublev as he lost the first set of the match. As he failed to gain control over the set, what followed was a gesture of frustration from the Italian star.

Heading towards the sides of the court between points in the first set, Sinner was seen kicking the towel box. Although the hit was very ‘gentle’ of sorts, it reflected upon the woes that the star player faced in the match. He eventually took out a towel from the box to wipe his sweat, but his disappointment was evident on his face.

While the Italian bounced back and defeated Rublev in three sets by 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, his angry reaction in the first set was still a bit surprising. Interestingly, it came just days after the fans witnessed a similar gesture from Carlos Alcaraz.

For the unversed, Alcaraz unveiled a completely different side of himself while playing against Gael Monfils in the second round of the ongoing Cincinnati Open. The Spaniard started the match with a remarkable first-set victory. However he failed to keep the momentum intact and after being pushed to the third set, he was furious. The 21-year-old was seen smashing his racket several times against the ground, which left it deformed. The gesture took the crowd by surprise as the young champ unleashed his rarely-seen side.

Jannik Sinner has often garnered praise from the tennis community for his calm demeanor. In an interaction in January this year, Indian tennis player Aryan Goveas praised the Italian dynamo recalling their first meet in 2018. “When players are 16, 17, they often lose their cool. But Sinner was calm. He did not argue with umpires even if he got a bad call.”
