ATP star Jannik Sinner continues to find himself at the center of controversy. Although the ATP number one won the ATP’s Fan Favorite Award, many within the tennis fraternity remain divided over this milestone. While some believe Novak Djokovic deserved the honor, others felt it should have gone to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. Adding to the debate, a former pro, reflecting on Sinner’s doping ordeal, expressed surprise at the outcome and shared his perspective.

Sinner received the ATP Fan-favorite Award for the second time in a row. This Italian player offered a great performance and earned two Major titles this season. He ended his 2024 season as the ATP number one by dethroning Novak Djokovic. Jannik Sinner’s recent recognition from the ATP might be symbolic but it still remains a big hope for the Italian that the fraternity still admires his playstyle and resilience despite the doping controversy. Jannik Sinner’s recent recognition has delighted the majority leaving some tennis personalities displeased. This is because they simply wanted their favorite athlete to win. One such player is John Isner who dropped an interesting opinion about this matter.

Ah, I am a little bit surprised cause you know he was, it wasn’t of course his personality but he’s 2024 was bit polarising cause I know some stuff went with him and went on with his that positive test that he was cleared of. So lot of people were you know fans of that. Nick Kyrgios being one of them. So I thought maybe that could’ve hurt him a little bit in this as far as fan-favorite goes but yeah it didn’t, and kudos to him,” said John Isner. Isner has been an incredible player and reached a career-high rank of eight in singles. His opinion has a valid point given Sinner landed into a pool of controversy when he tested positive for Clostebol. Not to forget, after ITIA’s verdict, his case is still ongoing at CAS and verdict is still due.

On the other hand, Alcaraz also had a great year winning two Major titles at Roland Garros and Wimbledon consecutively. Despite that neither he could win the ATP Fan-favorite award nor end his season as ATP number one or two. Isner’s comment was a response to the host of the Nothing Major podcast, who brought up Alcaraz’s name highlighting how he wanted the Spaniard to win for his personality.

The Serb’s established fan Pavvy G criticized Sinner’s potential and wrote on X, “Novak Djokovic has more followers on @X than ALL the active @atptour players have combined together.” He tried to highlight that the Serb has a gigantic follower across the globe. Therefore, it is unlikely for Sinner to overpower him in this milestone given he had a doping controversy this year. In fact, many people criticized ATP’s decision hinting at it as biased. “You’re telling me the dude who’s about to be banned for doping is the fans’ favorite!? You lot are unreal! Not even hiding it anymore – this award is an absolute joke!” wrote a person expressing their disagreement.
