Jannik Sinner outshines Djokovic and Alcaraz—Is he the next big thing in tennis despite the doping cloud?

Jannik Sinner is navigating the stormiest seas of his career right now, but his talent is proving to be an unsinkable ship. Despite the swirling controversies and setbacks, Sinner’s undeniable skills on the court have kept him ahead of the game. As the US Open begins to unfold, the Italian dynamo isn’t just surviving—he’s thriving, positioning himself as a top contender for the title. In fact, he’s making such waves that even heavyweights like Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are finding themselves behind him.

The 23-year-old is fresh off his victory at the Cincinnati Masters and stats highlight that he has an immense chance of repeating his showdown at the US Open as well. In an interesting piece of data shared by Opta Analyst that provides statistics for more than 30 sports in over 70 countries, the star player is expected to win the US Open title, as he maintains vast differences from his counterparts.

Sinner’s probability of winning the title stands at 17%, per the data. This is far more than that of Alcaraz and Djokovic, who stand at 10 percent and 9 percent, respectively. He has also left behind Alexander Zverev in the list, who has been given just 4.6% chances. Interestingly, this comes at a time when the Italian star is probably witnessing a dejected confidence level.

Remember, Sinner tested positive twice for low levels of a metabolite of clostebol, which is a banned anabolic steroid. However, the ruling of the independent tribunal went in his favor. It was found that Sinner’s physio Giacomo Naldi had used an over-the-counter spray containing Clostebol to treat a cut on his own finger. Then, he treated Sinner without gloves, which eventually resulted in the passing of the substance to his body. While the star player was let go with a fine, he received immense backlash from the tennis community, which might have shaken his confidence ahead of the final grand slam of the year.

However, the latest stats would definitely come as a major boost to Sinner, especially because of his recent performances at the Grand Slams. While he lifted the Australian Open title this year, he failed to repeat the same at the French Open and Wimbledon. On the other hand, Alcaraz emerged as the title winner in both slams, and Djokovic the runner-up in Wimbledon. Besides, the Serb clinched the Gold medal and Alcaraz won silver in the Paris Olympics. In addition to their recent form, both the players are leading the head-to-head tally against Sinner.

Speaking in his pre-tournament interview, the World No. 1 revealed the impact of the doping controversy on his preparations. “The preparation for this tournament has not been perfect because of certain circumstances,” explained Sinner, who has cut ties with trainer Umberto Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi after the doping controversy took center stage. “But, you know, it’s out. It’s something that I was waiting for, waiting for the result. So now it’s out, and that’s it,” the Italian further added.

As Sinner finally gears up and eyes to win his first title at Flushing Meadows, it would be interesting to see if he can get over the disappointments of the doping saga and be at the top of his game. What do you think?
