Jannik Sinner has done it again! The Italian No. 1 defeated Alexander Zverev, the No. 2, in the final of the 2025 Australian Open. While the hopes were high to see the German take his first grand slam win, Sinner was just a little better this time around when he sealed the deal with a three-set victory 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. Bringing their H2H now at 4-3, having encountered Sinner seven times now, does Zverev have any observation to share?
Sinner’s dominance was evident as he cruised through the match. A tough net cord in the second set seemed to crush Zverev’s spirit. He had his chances but faltered on match point with a wayward forehand. As Sinner raised his arms in triumph and celebrated with his team, it was bittersweet for Zverev, who continues to chase that elusive first major title after coming so close in previous finals. But no hard feelings for Sinner; he’s “just too good” right now!
During his post-match press conference, Zverev was asked if Sinner reminded him of one of the greats. Having competed against all of the Big Four in his decade-long career. He replied, “He’s very, very similar to Novak when he is at his best. They barely miss. They make you think you have to overhit all the time to have a chance in a rally against them, and it’s very, very difficult to win a point from the back of the court against them.”

While Zverev did manage to win against Novak Djokovic in their last meeting, it was under unfortunate circumstances when Nole had to retire due to a hamstring injury. They’ve faced off 13 times, with Djokovic holding a significant edge by winning twice as many matches. The Serb last triumphed at the Cincinnati Open in 2023, showcasing his dominance with a straight-sets victory. Still, Zverev has had his moments too, including two impressive three-set wins over Djokovic in 2021, notably during the Tokyo Olympics semi-final.
Zverev noted how both players corner him on the court: “Against Novak and him, they move tremendously; they’re constantly on the baseline. They don’t give you any space; they don’t give you any time.” Both players are aggressive baseliners who love to dictate play with their powerful groundstrokes. They keep opponents guessing with their shot variety—Sinner’s heavy hitting and Djokovic’s precision. Plus, both have incredible mental toughness, staying calm and focused when it matters most! As Sascha said, “They’re too good for me again.”

But Zverev isn’t giving up hope: “I’ll do everything I can to be able to compete with them and to lift that trophy, but today was nowhere near good enough.” While he sees Sinner as resembling the Serbian GOAT, some analysts suggest he might just be the new Roger Federer!
Tennis journalist draws parallels to Jannik Sinner and Federer
Roger Federer‘s ability to cover the net and execute shots with precision made him a standout player on the Tour. Something akin to what Jannik displayed in his match against Zverev on January 26. After winning the first two sets, tennis journalist Bastien Fachan tweeted, “The net coverage… Welcome back Roger Federer.” This was a nod to Sinner’s exceptional net play, reminiscent of Federer’s all-court game. Known for his speed and fluid style, Federer set the standard for net coverage, and Sinner’s impressive stats—winning 10 out of 13 net points (77%) against Zverev – hinted at him following in Roger’s footsteps.

The way he maneuvered at the net echoed Federer’s legendary skills, showcasing a level of artistry that many tennis fans admire. As Sinner dominated the match, he showcased his incredible skills without facing a single break point. He took the final with scores of 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3, solidifying his status as one of the top players in the game. Zverev fought hard but struggled to find his rhythm, especially during crucial moments like when he was just two points away from taking control at 5-4 in the second set. Ultimately, Sinner’s ability to turn defensive shots into momentum-shifting plays made all the difference.
With this victory, Sinner claimed his third Grand Slam title and became the youngest player since Jim Courier to win back-to-back titles at Melbourne Park. As he celebrated his win, it was clear that this was just the beginning for the 23-year-old Italian sensation. Will he keep up this winning streak in the months to come?
