Is Jannik Sinner's jab at Taylor Fritz a sign of growing rivalry or just playful banter?

The 2024 US Open final was a starry affair. Global superstars from different fields descended to the Arthur Ashe Stadium to witness one of the biggest tennis matches of the year. From the likes of Matthew McConaughey to Lewis Hamilton, some of the biggest names were in attendance as Jannik Sinner clinched his maiden US Open title. Another global superstar who made her presence felt was none other than Taylor Swift. The American singer attended the final along with her boyfriend, Travis Kelce. And Swift, of course, was rooting for Taylor Fritz, the local boy.

Jannik Sinner appeared for a brief interview with TODAY after winning his maiden US Open title and during the conversation, he talked about the crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, who were vocal in support of Taylor Fritz. But the Italian star admitted that the fans were fair and celebrated good tennis. Subsequently, Sinner was asked about Taylor’s presence in the stadium. However, the interviewer immediately made it clear that she was talking about Taylor Swift and not Taylor Fritz. Sinner smiled and replied, “Yeah, I know. They joke around a lot.”

It was a bit of a tongue-in-cheek remark by the US Open champion. Fritz actually once admitted that he was mistakenly called Taylor Swift sometimes. “I’ve seen a lot of, I’ve had a lot of people call like say, Taylor Swift instead of Fritz. I don’t know. I don’t see the similarities really so much, but I don’t know, when it happens, I don’t really care, obviously,” Fritz said.

Despite the massive support for him, Taylor Fritz couldn’t get past Sinner as the wait got even longer for an American player to become men’s singles champion at the US Open. Andy Roddick was the last one to do so in 2003 and it has been 21 years since that void. Fritz was expected to end the drought. But he couldn’t. As a result, he apologized to the local fans for not being able to lift the title for them.

Taylor Fritz after loss to Jannik Sinner: ‘I’m sorry I couldn’t get it done’

The American star gave it his all but Sinner was too good yesterday as he prevailed in straight sets over Fritz. Despite the crowd being on his side, Fritz lost points at crucial junctures in the match which eventually proved to be the difference. Fritz was left dejected with the loss and apologized to the fans as the wait continued for them.

“I know you’ve been waiting for a (American) champion for a long time, so I’m sorry I couldn’t get it done this time, but I’m going to keep working and hopefully I’ll get it done next time, thank you. It’s been an amazing run and thank you to the fans for everything this week. Being an American at the US Open is just incredible, feeling love all week, so thank you so much,” the 26-year-old said after the match.
