Jannik Sinner, who has been on a roll throughout the hard court season, has once again stunned the tennis realm. Although it’s arguably the most challenging task in the sport to defeat Novak Djokovic, the Italian player has done it twice in a span of twelve days. After overcoming the 24-time singles Grand Slam champion in a group stage match of the Nitto ATP Finals, Sinner has once again outperformed the Serb at the Davis Cup.

Later, Sinner also helped his country overcome Australia, as they enjoyed a triumphant run at the Davis Cup. Notably, the 22-year-old player’s heroics are being lauded by his fellow countrymen, including the Hall of Famer, Nicola Pietrangeli.

After a long period of 47 years, the Italian Davis Cup team has finally tasted success at the premier international team event. Italy, featuring the young ATP sensation Jannik Sinner, defeated 29-time champion Australia 2-0 in the championship match.

Reacting to his country’s exceptional performance against the Aussies, Nicola Pietrangeli issued his own assessment of their game. The Hall of Famer said, “Today we are playing another type of tennis. I’m not saying mine was better, but first you also had to know how to play tennis.” 

Meanwhile, Pietrangeli also didn’t hold himself back from heaping praise on Italy’s star player, Jannik Sinner, who has been in phenomenal form throughout the tournament. The 2-time singles Grand Slam champion said, “Sinner is a tank, if you send him to war he wins on his own. It is an example, a phenomenon. Now he has become a man, and what a man”.

The 22-year-old player undoubtedly deserves all the praise given his individual brilliance throughout the international team event.

Sinner paved the path for his country to Davis Cup glory

The current world No. 4 player was undefeated in his singles matches at the premier international team event. Carrying on his great on-court momentum from the Nitto ATP Finals, the 22-year-old clinched a straight-set win against Tallon Greikspoor, 7-6, 6-1, in his first match of the Davis Cup.

Later, Sinner pulled off an upset against the 24-time singles Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic as the Italian side secured a place in the championship match. In the blockbuster finale, the young Italian player dispatched Alex De Minaur in a straight-set contest, 6-3, 6-0, giving his country their first Davis Cup trophy since 1976.
