Tennis and Rafael Nadal are almost synonymous for many in the community. The legendary Spaniard has not only delivered iconic matches but has also redefined the sport’s very essence. His relentless spirit, unparalleled work ethic, and remarkable achievements have inspired countless players and fans alike, making him a beacon of excellence in tennis. One of the latest to reiterate Nadal’s dominance is the rising British star, Jack Draper

Growing up as a kid, Draper’s love for the Spaniard had remained immense. It would be hard to believe for many that the Brit in fact used to copy Rafa’s signature piratical look. Even years later, the fandom has not died down. In an interview that featured on British Vogue, the budding star shared his dream to play alongside Rafael Nadal.

Speaking in the interview, the Stuttgart Open winner said, “My dream doubles partner would be Rafael Nadal. I think he is my biggest Tennis idol.” This is a surprising remark for many as the 22-year-old seemed to snub his compatriot and the legendary tennis player Andy Murray. Draper and Murray have been close friends for years now, ever since the 37-year-old sustained a hip injury. Jack had also expressed his desire to play like Murray in the future.

In an interview that featured on Metro, the British player acknowledged that he wishes to play like Murray. “Andy was, and still is, a huge role model,” Draper said. “He is someone I really look up to.” When quizzed if he desires to fill in Andy’s shoes, the star player responded humbly. “I think I’ve got a long way to go until that happens. I will just focus on improving and learning and I am sure at some point in the future I will give myself a shot.” However, he did not completely ignore his role model in the British Vogue interview either.

Chatting further, he acknowledged Murray as an iconic player. “Him(Rafa) and Andy….I think is just iconic.” This is not the first time that the budding player has picked Nadal over anyone else. In a previous interview, he recalled the impact that Rafa had on him as a kid. “There’s no denying he’s an iconic player. And what he’s done within the game is incredible,” said Draper ahead of his Australian Open match against Rafa, this year. Meanwhile, Jack Draper’s performance this season is even lauded by his opponents.

His serve is not fun..’ Tommy Paul is all praises for Jack Draper

Speaking in the post-match interview, Paul admitted the challenges against Drape. “I knew today was going to be a battle, it’s never easy with Jack. He has been playing some amazing tennis. I’m really happy to get through that one.” Speaking further, he went on to praise his serves. “His serve is not fun to deal with. He plays very aggressive, takes you off your game. The key was to play my game and I think I did a pretty good job today.”

Meanwhile, the fit and in-form player Jack Draper is all set to enter the grass-court Grand Slam at Wimbledon. It will be interesting to see if he can showcase similar skills at the prestigious tournament as well.
