Andy Murray has been going through a tough time, right from the start of this season. Out of the 9 events that he took part in, the tennis star faced opening match exits in 4 of them along with finding himself out of the rest without even achieving a notable spot. While Murray has already announced that he would sign off from his professional career soon, former coach Amelie Mauresmo recently came forward to highlight the physical hardships he had to go through.

Out of all the names that played parts in Andy Murray’s journey as a coach, the period with Amelie Mauresmo came out to be one of the most painful ones for the ATP star. The French Open director, who coached Andy Murray from 2014 to 2016, recently spoke to Eurosport about the physical and mental challenges Murray faced throughout his career, especially from the time when she worked closely with him.

She shared her concerns and hopes regarding his potential retirement from tennis. “I have a particular bond with Andy,” Mauresmo said, remembering the days when she used to sit in the box while Murray played. Along with that, she drew his name parallel to that of Rafael Nadal in terms of enduring pain out of injuries. “I think he’s capable of inflicting really hard things to himself with a lot of pain as well (as Rafa). I’ve seen him suffer too, and it’s been a while since I stopped working with him,” Maurismo added.

Being a former world No. 1 herself, Maurismo acknowledged the efforts Murray has put into his career, despite his ongoing physical issues (the hip injury because of which he had to undergo two major surgeries). “For a long time now, he’s been physically enduring things that aren’t necessarily very pleasant. And I know that sometimes he wants to carry on, sometimes he wants to stop.”

Former coach urges Andy Murray to find the right time for his retirement

Andy Murray is planning to say goodbye to the tennis world. While the ATP star himself hinted that he might retire after this summer, Mauresmo expressed her hopes to see him make a decision that best suits his well-being. “I just hope he’ll find the right moment for himself, for his body, and above all in his head, to say to himself: ‘okay, now’s the time to stop quietly,’” she urged.

Along with that, she also revealed her desire to see him make a wise choice about all of this. “If it’s his last, it’ll be his last. If it’s not his last, we’ll see him again and that’s even better! But I just want him to be serene about the whole thing,” she added.

As the whole tennis world is still curious to find out what exactly would be the point of his farewell, Mauresmo’s words highlighted the terrifying injuries that he had to go through in his career, making the retirement plans seem more justified.
