Nick Kyrgios is back! During a conversation at the SXSW (South By Southwest) in October this year, Kyrgios revealed, “I will be playing the Australian Open this summer.” He also spoke about how he missed being out there playing in front of a home crowd. The Aussie star has been struggling with knee and wrist issues for quite some time now, keeping him out of action for almost two seasons. However, now that he has already announced his return, all he wants is the “bonus” element of his comeback.
Talking about Nick Kyrgios’ glorious days, he won 7 titles in his career so far. Although he hasn’t won a Grand Slam title yet, he reached the final of the Wimbledon Championships in 2022. During the same conversation with SXSW, Kyrgios also claimed, “My only motivation to come back and play is to try and win a grand slam, and I’ll give it one more shot.”
However, during a November 9th interview with 9News Melbourne, Kyrgios said that while retirement was a motivator for his comeback, all achievements in his career from now onwards will be a “bonus” prize for all the hardships that he had to go through in the last couple of years. “I’ve already won in my eyes. Now everything I do on the tennis court whether I win a match or a tournament or anything like that is going to be a bonus,” said Kyrgios. Why is he saying this, though?

“It has been a long journey of recovery to be where I am today, one of the goals I had set was to be able to play during the Aussie summer, so I am excited that I get to start in Brisbane which is one of my favorite tournaments,” said the 29-year-old tennis star. He currently has a protected ranking of world number 21. This may help him a bit in his comeback journey! Talking about help, well interestingly, Nick Kyrgios also revealed how Novak Djokovic inspired him to make this incredible return.
Recalling one of his meetings with Djokovic during this period, he said, “I was hitting with Novak, and when he said to me, ‘It doesn’t look like you’ve had surgery’, and that was a big motivation to say like maybe I’m actually making some inroads and some progress into getting back because I didn’t really know. That was a big drive for me.” He feels hearing this from Nole instantly did wonders to his motivation and encouraged him to push further. How excited are you to see Kyrgios back in action, though?
