What can be better than being acknowledged for your feats by a tennis legend? For current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, perhaps nothing comes close. The Italian star’s recent performance has garnered widespread praise from the tennis community. In the latest development, Swiss Maestro Roger Federer has joined the fray to sing praises for Sinner, adding a touch of grandeur to the young champion’s rising fame.

The Italian sensation has been on a remarkable run this season. While he lost in the semi-finals against Carlos Alcaraz, a new feat was added to his crown. Sinner successfully clinched the World No. 1 title after Novak Djokovic withdrew from the tournament following a meniscus injury. The legendary Swiss former player Roger Federer went out to sing praises for the youngster calling him a ‘good boy.’

Speaking in a recent interaction, featured on La Gazzetta dello Sport, Federer highlighted the achievements of Italian tennis and its current superstar. “First of all, it’s excellent news for tennis. And it’s fantastic that an Italian is number 1. This shows that the great work of recent years and the organization of many tournaments in Italy has led to good results.” Italy has hosted several challenger events and is increasing the numbers significantly. This has allowed young Italian players to be offered wildcards and compete against quality opponents.

Speaking further in the interview, Federer lauded other players from the country and reflected that the country’s young generation will soon grow stronger. “Italy can count on a very strong generation, which at the moment has number 1 in the world! Sinner deserves it, he’s playing great and he’s a very good boy, very sweet.” Applauding Sinner further, the tennis legend said,  “I follow him with great interest.”

Jannik Sinner’s record is indeed a milestone for Italy as well. He became the first player to hold the title, ever since the first ATP rankings were published in 1973. The praise that he received from Federer is surely poised to boost the Italian’s morale. Federer himself dominated the World No. 1 position for a record 237 consecutive weeks and 310 weeks in total. Meanwhile, Sinner’s regard for Federer is equally high.

Celebrating Jannik Sinner’s glory as the World No. 1, ATP published a recent video on their social media and complimented the young star. Responding to the video, Sinner was seen in all-round praises for his idol, Roger Federer.

The Italian tennis star revealed the importance of the Swiss legend in his career. “My idol was Federer, his message was special.” However, he thanked all the other players, who complimented his success. “..but all the messages received from the former world number 1s were beautiful. I would like to be able to thank them personally, doing it with each one in person would be the best.”

Meanwhile, Sinner is currently gearing up for his grass-court season with his first match at the Halle Open. It will interesting to see if the newly crowned World No.1 can demonstrate significant gameplay at Wimbledon as well!
