The dark side of social media is often understated. We don’t usually see athletes speaking up against it. Recently, during Roland Garros, Sloane Stephens pointed out the flaws of social media. In the tennis fraternity, we have seen quite a few players raise their voices on social media. However, a particular individual has been quite outspoken in this aspect.
Nick Kyrgios, the Aussie ace opened up on social media being a distraction for him. In his Wimbledon press conference, the last year’s finalist spoke at lengths on this topic. His opinion on the flaws of social media was the highlight of his 12-minute press conference.

Kyrgios had mentioned that during his Wimbledon run last year, social media was pretty brutal for him. So, it comes off as no surprise that a journalist inquired about his usage. Kyrgios said, “I’ve consciously made an effort to try and get off my phone. It’s a rabbit hole, I think a lot of players on the tour struggle with that. Many players have shared their opinion on what they get online. It’s horrible.”
The negative comments on social media had impacted the Aussie last year but he seems to be limiting his online time right now. He further added, “What athletes have to deal with, I don’t think it’s normal. How much criticism and how much negativity and how much sniping that people have to deal with now, it’s out of control. If you don’t make a conscious effort, it can really get you down.”
Hours after delivering a strong press conference, things did not go as planned for Nick Kyrgios. The Aussie ace was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon following a wrist injury.

Injury woes continue for Nick Kyrgios
Kyrgios has been dealing with injuries since the start of the season. He missed Australian Open, Indian Wells, and the entire clay swing. The defending runner-up tried to come back on his favorite surface in the grass swing but could only play one match ahead of Wimbledon. Despite practicing on the SW19 courts and delivering the press conference, he pulled out of the tournament citing a torn ligament in his wrist.
