Jannik Sinner is everywhere this season – there’s no way you can keep him away from the spotlight. The Italian has had a phenomenal run in 2024, as he took the World No.1 spot, won his first two Grand Slam trophies, and then the season finale in Turin last week. If that wasn’t enough, he also led his country to a title victory at the Davis Cup on Sunday. However, one renowned tennis insider believes that even without Sinner, Italy would have won the laurels in Malaga.
In an episode of the Tennis Channel podcast, dated November 25, British commentator and tennis expert Jason Goodall showered praises on the Italian players for their amazing performances throughout the event in Malaga. “They’ve got strength in depth, haven’t they?” he said. Goodall then made an intriguing statement on Jannik’s role in Italy’s emphatic win. “Even if Sinner wasn’t playing, they’d still be very much one of the favorites to perhaps win the trophy,” he said. Jason implied that all the Italian players were in top form in the Davis Cup – it wasn’t just Sinner. And that all of them showcased their skills brilliantly, thus winning the title for their nation.
However, Goodall then applauded Sinner for his decision to participate in the event. According to him “It’s just so nice that Sinner has actually committed to playing this competition over the course of the last two seasons, because we know that often players don’t.” Sometimes top-seeded players skip the Davis Cup at the end of the season after playing through the ATP events. But Sinner didn’t choose that route even when he could have. “So I just think for the world number one player to commit to playing and allow Italy to win it, not once, but twice in the last couple of seasons, is really, really good for us tennis fans,” added the insider in the podcast.

For those unaware, Italy faced the Netherlands on November 24th in its second consecutive Davis Cup final. Last year, they had won the title and there was a lot of pressure on the players to continue the winning momentum in 2024 as well. The team didn’t disappoint. Apart from Jannik Sinner, it also comprised Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Musetti, Simone Bolelli, and Andrea Vavassori.
In the title clash, Matteo set the stage for a historic win as he overcame the challenge of Botic Van de Zandschulp; he beat him 6-4, 6-2. It was then Sinner’s turn to take the lead to 2-0 and he did exactly that. The World No.1 won 7-6(2) 6-2 against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor and handed Italy its third overall Davis Cup victory.

Additionally, the Fox also managed to replicate a rare record of Roger Federer and Serena Williams with his shining performance in Malaga. But what is it?
Jannik Sinner ends the season without losing in straight sets
The World No.1 has equaled the record of legends Federer and Serena by completing his 2024 season without losing any match in straight sets. Rog and Serena are the only two players to do it in this century. While the 20-time Grand Slam champion did it in 2005, Serena did it in the year 2013. But this was not the only record that Sinner registered to his name during the course of the season.

The Fox played 79 ATP matches in 2024, out of which he’s emerged victorious in 73 and lost just six. In doing so, he clinched eight ATP titles, including the Australian Open and the US Open. This month, he became the first player, after Ivan Lendl in 1986, to win the ATP Finals tournament without dropping a single set. He beat Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in a one-sided final in Turin.
While this season has been nothing less than a dream for the Italian, he’s still got a lot to achieve. At the beginning of the next season, he will definitely look to continue his dominant run at the Australian Open. He will enter the tournament as a defending champion. In 2024, he beat Daniil Medvedev in a thrilling final. This time, his only goal will be to add one more Major trophy to his cabinet while also keeping his No.1 position intact. Do you think Sinner’s unmatched supremacy will continue in 2025 as well? Let us know in the comments below.
