Alexander Zverev has found a second home in Italy! The German tennis pro’s recent statement about feeling “Italian” when he plays in the country has ignited a new spark of excitement among fans. But amid the enthusiasm, will he be able to replace the home favorite, Jannik Sinner? According to Zverev, “maybe” there is a chance.

In a thrilling semifinal clash in Rome, Alexander Zverev battled to defeat his opponent, Tabilo. The score of 1-6, 7-6, 7-4, and 6-2 is nothing but a testament to their extremely intense battle against each other. As he secured his spot in the final against Nicolas Jarry, the crowd at the Foro Italico erupted with appreciation and support for the 27-year-old player. Addressing this in his post-match conference, Zverev highlighted his joy at playing in Italy.

“Normally the crowd always wants the underdog to do good, the underdog to win. I really felt like they were behind me so much. It helps. I really appreciate it.” His statement also reflects another aspect of the story. The current World No. 2, Jannik Sinner, who is from Italy, has naturally attracted the love and support of his country through his talent on-court. 

Well, we saw a glimpse of that when Sinner qualified for the ATP finals in Turin last year. The Italian crowd, happy at this great achievement, waved flags, chanted his name, and united themselves to show their collective support and devotion to its rising tennis star. Even during the Italian Open last year, an excited crowd’s support always worked in support of the tennis pro. 

However, this year he could not replicate the same as Sinner had to withdraw from Rome owing to his hip injury. However, Zverev is optimistic about making the crowd “loud” once again through his performance this week. “I would not replace Jannik, but maybe for this week, if they can see it like that, I’m happy about that.”  

Continuing, Zverev further added, “It’s funny that when I play in Italy, actually one of the three countries I would say where I get the most support. I mean, really, I feel like I’m Italian when I play here. I get so much support, so much love, so much energy from the crowd all the time. Even today.” Along with the support of the crowd, he also spoke about one thing that further propelled him towards his victory.

He came back today with more vigor and enthusiasm. After his match, Zverev revealed how it ultimately helped him secure the victory. “I brought my energy up. I was really just hanging on and waiting and the patience was kind of good today.” 

After a stunning semifinal, now it is time for him to showcase the same resilience in the final against Nicolas Jarry. Whether he lifts the trophy or not, Alexander Zverev’s connection with Italy will remain unchanged.
