Roger Federer’s retirement news came out as a shock to the tennis world. After his 20th grand slam victory, his fans were eagerly waiting for his next victory. Although he reached the Wimbledon final the very next year, he lost to the Serbian, Novak Djokovic. Recently, in an interview, one of Federer?s coaches opened up about his last grand slam chance.

For more than a year, the Swiss maestro has been suffering from injuries and surgeries and they have taken a toll on his body, leaving him no other option. His last grand slam triumph came in 2018 when he won the Australian Open finals against the Croatian player, Marin ?ili?.?

Ivan Ljubicic joined the tennis star as his coach a few years back. After teaming up with the former world number one, the 2019 Wimbledon finals against Novak Djokovic was their most heartbreaking defeat. In a recent conversation, Ljubicic detailed the two-point loss and how they never thought that it might be Federer?s last opportunity to win a grand slam.?
He said, ?I mean, it was not a tragedy of epic proportions, but it was a big shame because he played magnificently and I was proud of him as a coach. He was close, but you win some, you lose some.? His coach discussed the loss-win dimension and how sometimes playing well also weighs on losing. The former tennis player also said that after the win, they celebrated because they made it to the finals, leaving the bitter loss behind.

Additionally, he talked about the fact that it felt like they will have more chances to win a grand slam. He said, ?We moved on. In the end, it turned out to be his last big opportunity to win a Slam, but we did not know that at the time?we believed that we would have one more chance.??
Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic Wimbledon clashes?
Over the past 17 years, the Swiss maestro and the Serbian tennis ace won a total of 13 Wimbledon victories collectively. Notably, they both have faced each other four times at Wimbledon and the 21-time Grand Slam champion has won three of those battles, while the former world number one only had one, that too in the semifinals.

2012 Wimbledon Championships quarterfinal was their first encounter, which Federer won to go to his eighth Wimbledon final. And they had their last Wimbledon feud back in 2019 when the 35-year-old Serbian got the better of the tennis legend.
