Roger Federer fans across the world were heart-broken when the Maestro announced he won’t be participating in the US Open 2021. While fans got a glimpse of Federer at Wimbledon this year, he’s been constantly struggling with his injury since then. The Swiss giant has another surgery on his troublesome knee scheduled.

After the end of an engaging and thoroughly entertaining US Open, the build-up for the Laver Cup 2021 has begun. Federer has participated in all three editions of the tournament so far and won all three for Team Europe. So, the question arises, will Federer participate in its 2021 edition?

Roger Federer still struggling with knee injury

The 20 times grand slam champion announced in August 2021 that he won’t be competing at Laver Cup this year. In an interview with Laver cup, the Swiss stated that he needs to undergo another knee surgery. “I’m really disappointed to be missing this year’s Laver Cup,” said Federer in the interview. Laver Cup is regarded as Federer’s favorite tournament as he loves to play there.

2021 hasn’t been a vintage year for the 39-years-old. Federer withdrew from the Australian Open as he was still recovering from the knee surgery. He advanced to the fourth round of the French Open but withdrew due to knee problems.

Roger Federer returned to Wilmbledon with a positive approach. Slowly and steadily, he advanced to the quarter-finals before stumbling against the 14th seed Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets 6-3, 7-6, 6-0. The third set of the encounter was Federer’s first bagel at Wimbledon, ever.

Federer to miss Laver Cup for the first time

The Laver Cup’s inaugural edition was held in 2017, and players have thoroughly loved competing in it since then. The event will be held for the fourth time this year. Laver cup got cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

So far, Federer has participated in every edition and has always won for Team Europe. Team Europe has benefited enormously from Federer’s presence in the past, but the icon will not be there this time. Although Federer is not competing in the event, he believes Team Europe has the potential to win the Laver Cup for the fourth time this year. Before the tournament, he also sent his warmest wishes to all of Team Europe’s players.

Roger Federer announced he will be out for the remainder of the 2021 season, but he hopes to return for the 2022 tour.
