With the Australian Open 2022 nearing, will defending champion Novak Djokovic be there to retain his crown? Having kept fans in the dark ever since the end of last season, the star finally posted about his decision on social media last week. However, owing to some visa issues, the World No.1’s participation came into question. But with the official update out, will Djokovic be playing in the first Grand Slam of the season?

Having last featured in late 2021, Novak Djokovic ended the year on a disappointing note. In the year-end Nitto ATP Finals, he went down to German Alexander Zverev in a thrilling encounter. Yet, the season was a revelation for Djokovic. Winning three out of the four majors, he was merely one match away from sweeping the Slams.

In addition to this form, he also performed exceedingly well at the Tokyo Olympics, although he didn’t come away with a medal. Looking forward to the upcoming campaign, 2022 promised huge things for the 34-year-old.

Last year, ‘Nole’ swept Russian Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final; the same man who conquered him in the US Open later that year. Travelling Down Under in early 2022, Novak had to overcome all sorts of hurdles and obstacles. Nonetheless, it is confirmed that the reigning 3-time winner will take part in the 2022 Australian Open, in the hope to make it four out of four.

Djokovic’s Australian Open saga explained

With fans waiting impatiently for his decision, Djokovic finally addressed them on the 4th of January. With his medical condition not in keeping with the Covid-19 guidelines in Australia, his participation was put into question.

However, the 20-time Grand Slam champion confirmed that he will be heading Down Under with an exemption permission. This caused a huge uproar, as pundits and fans were divided on him being allowed to compete.

Once he reached the Melbourne airport, there was immediate chaos. Due to some issues with the 34-year-old’s visa and lack of government permission, the Serbian was forced to wait. With the Australian authorities denying Novak his exemption, he was detained in a hotel until further notice. And while all is well now, there was insane chaos for close to a week.
