Amongst them was the former World Number 1, Stan Smith. The veteran tennis star was dominant in both singles as well as doubles. Additionally, he served in the Army as well for his country. Recently, he revealed how his role in the army helped him spread tennis.

Stan Smith had to balance two big things in life. Along with his duty to serve the country, he also ventured into tennis and gave his best. Here’s how his role in the army was beneficial for tennis as well.

Stan Smith makes a candid confession

Recently, the 76-year-old was involved in an interview with TennisWorthy. During the discussion, he detailed lesser-known stories from the past. One such story was about his contribution to tennis while serving in the army.

Talking about this, he said, What I realized is that I was able to do a lot representing the United States in different ways during the two years I was in the Army. In my case, the responsibility was to go to various bases and give tennis clinics, go to inner city areas and do tennis clinics.”

Smith is widely popular in the tennis world. His association with Adidas is one of the reasons behind it, as Smith is one of the most renowned sneaker models to be ever created by the brand. Despite being so popular, he had a big regret which surrounded another legend, Roger Federer.

Stan Smith wanted Federer to join Adidas

The Swiss maestro was on the rival team of Adidas, i.e. Nike, during his peak days. Further, he joined hands with On Shoes and never really tied up with Adidas. Smith, who was a poster boy of Adidas, revealed his regret about Federer not joining him.

Smith revealed, “Adidas should have signed him. We would have made a good pair. He’s been more involved in the stuff he wears than the other tennis players.”

Nonetheless, Stan Smith went on to create a huge record for Adidas as more than 100 Million pairs were sold. The 76-year-old truly remains one of the true legends of tennis and his contribution to all walks of life only adds to his greatness.
