Andre Agassi was one of the top tennis players of his era. In his tennis career, he won eight Grand Slam titles, yet his influence on the game was distinct and varied. The young phenom at the time, fell in love with a rising Hollywood actress and did everything in his power to win her over.
Agassi’s chaotic picnic ride with his ex-wife
In 1994, the American tennis pro won the US Open for the first time. Following his first victory at Flushing Meadows, he was invited to an interview, where he recounted a humorous episode involving his then-girlfriend Shields when he took her out on a picnic date in his expensive Hummer.
He said, “I actually took it out on an early date with Brooke. And it actually got me in a lot of trouble because we were holding hands, you know, I mean it’s not really first space but you’re really nervous you’re going out with you know with Brooke and you want to impress her so we’re gonna go have a nice picnic on the mountains.”
Rather than leaving her hand and shifting to normal drive, the tennis icon put into neutral and then reversed the same, creating chaos. Agassi understood that this was not the positive impression he wanted to make on his date.
Agassi immediately found a solution, though, and made it appear as though they had arrived at their destination unexpectedly. “I did not make a good impression. The car completely just stalled went out and we’re in the middle of nowhere, yeah, but then I acted like you know this is what was supposed to happen. Well, we’re here,” he added.
