‘I’m Sorry for Letting You Down’- Alexander Zverev Releases a Statement After ATP Removes Him From Acapulco

In a match full of drama, Alexander Zverev received grave punishment from the tournament organizers at Acapulco. It all started when Zverev lost his cool during his doubles match with the Brazilian, Marcelo Melo. At the end of that match, Zverev aggressively smashed his racket at the place where the chair umpire was sitting.

As a result of this behavior, he has been withdrawn from the tournament. Notably, Zverev was still playing the singles matches at the Mexican Open. After all the drama, the German player finally responded as he wrote an apology letter on social media.

Alexander Zverev wrote an apology letter on Instagram

Fans were not happy with the German player’s behavior, as many wanted him out of the tournament. Some were even urging for a ban. After ATP defaulted him from the tournament, Zverev posted an apology letter on Instagram story.

“It is difficult to put into words how much I regret my behavior during and after the doubles match yesterday. I have privately apologized to the chair umpire because my outbursts towards him was wrong and unacceptable, and I am only disappointed in myself. It just should not have happened and there is no excuse. I would also like to apologize to my fans, the tournament, and the sport I love.”

“As you know, I leave everything on the court. Yesterday, I left too much. I am going to take the coming days to reflect – on my actions and how I can ensure that it will not happen again. I am sorry for letting you down,” the German player further wrote.

Zverev would like to forget this day

The incident happened during the super tie-break when the pair of Alexander Zverev and Marcelo Melo were losing by 8-6 to the pair of Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara. Suddenly, one call changed the dynamics of the game, as the line judge and the chair umpire called the ball in.

Zverev simply could not accept that call and after the match, he aggressively smashed his racket and almost hit the chair umpire. As a result, ATP Acapulco had to remove him from the tournament with an official statement. 

It will be interesting to see if Zverev gets any further punishment even after an apology.
