After a below-par performance at the clay-court swing this year, Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem has announced his decision to withdraw from Wimbledon Championships.

The reason for his withdrawal is a right wrist injury that the Austrian suffered during his first-round match against Adrian Mannarino at Mallorca Open 2021. Thiem was in control of the match as he led the first set by 5-2 before injuring his right wrist while attempting a forehand passing shot.

As soon as he retired from the match midway, the Austrian moved to Barcelona to undergo the required tests. Tests found that there is a detachment of the posterior sheath of the ulnar side of the right wrist.

Dominic Thiem set to miss three tournaments due to a wrist injury at Mallorca

Due to the injury, Thiem won’t be able to participate in any of the upcoming tournaments scheduled in his calendar. Right from the moment he walked off the court at Mallorca, things didn’t look bright for the 2020 US Open champion.

Even before the official announcement, there were several reports that confirmed the Austrian’s exit from Wimbledon this year. Despite not having a great record at SW19, Thiem could have used the match practice from Wimbledon to better prepare for the hard-court season.

The official communication came from the Austrian’s team, where they mentioned that Thiem will be wearing a wrist splint for five weeks before beginning the recovery gradually.

From the message, it appears clear that Thiem will have a long rehabilitation process and the rest of the season isn’t looking good for this talented player.

The Austrian shared the same via Twitter and promised fans that he will do everything in his strength to make a strong comeback as soon as possible.

I’m going to do everything the doctors say in order to recover as quickly as possible. They’ve informed me that I might be out for several weeks, but I will do my best to be back on court soon. I’m really sorry for pulling out of the upcoming three tournaments I had in my calendar Wimbledon, Hamburg and Gstaad,” quoted Thiem.
