Novak Djokovic still wins tournaments like he is in the prime of his life. The Serbian star is 36 years old but still triumphs over players younger by a decade. As he nears 40, the discussion surrounding his retirement heats up more. Many have speculated on when he will eventually give up the racket, and the Serbian pro shared his thoughts regarding retirement after his recent win in the Australian Open.

As Djokovic touched on the topic of his retirement in the post-match presser, he also added family to the mix. For him, family is as important as tennis, and leaving them behind is a big task, which serves as another challenge to him.

Playing the tournament he has won 10 times and gaining entry in the quarterfinal, Novak Djokovic is feeling great about his stint in the Aussie slam. He recently won against Adrian Mannarino while boggling him in the first two sets. After the match, the WTA number 1 was asked about his plans for retirement. He said that he doesn’t want to leave the sport while he is still on the top.

When I feel that I am not able to compete at the highest level with the guys and be a contender for a Grand Slam title, then I’ll probably consider going into retirement. But that can change, obviously. I mean, a lot of things can change. I’m not a teenager anymore. I’m a father and a husband. A lot of things happening in the private life off court that I enjoy, that require my attention, my presence, my energy.”

For the Djoker, retirement is not a thought at the moment. He still beats the best players on tour and continues to gain titles, creating more and more records. Although he wants to continue playing, he is faced with a big challenge.

Family man Djokovic is devastated

For the Djoker, not being with his family while he plays in various tournaments is one of the biggest mental challenges. In the same post-match presser, he revealed, “Being separated from the family hurts me more and more. That’s the part that I struggle with more now. So, yeah, I try to balance things out with working with my schedule in such way and calendar that is suitable to me.”

Despite the struggles, the 24-time grand slam champion continues to outperform any player he meets in a match. There is no confirmation about when he plans on not playing tennis anymore. While he decides on his retirement, we can sit back and watch him play great tennis.
