At the peak of his powers, Boris Becker was unstoppable on the tennis court. He powered his way through to 6 singles Major titles, 43 other singles titles, and 15 doubles titles. It’s no wonder tennis fans regard him as one of the greatest ever to grace the game. However, Becker’s popularity proved to be problematic for his personal life.

In the recently released second part of the Apple TV documentary ‘Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker’, Becker looked back on his relationship with ex-wife Barbara. In an emotional moment, he revealed how racism reared its ugly head and affected the relationship.

Becker’s love for Barbara served as the basis for the marriage

Boris Becker’s love affair with Barbara Feltus began in 1992, and as soon as the press caught wind of it, the problems started. According to Becker, they were a result of him falling “in love with a black woman”.

In the documentary, Becker said, “I’m colorblind. I didn’t see she was darker than me and I just fell in love with the woman.” This goes to show how Becker, at his core, was firmly against racial discrimination.

However, he expressed dismay at the things that the German press said about the couple. “Some of the things that I heard about my wife and some of the things she heard. You just can’t believe it.”

However, not long after, the marriage went downhill, and in 2000, Becker filed for divorce. A much publicized hearing ensued, which ended with the couple finally divorcing in 2001.
