Carlos Alcaraz prevailed against Stefanos Tsitsipas in yet another thrilling encounter between the two. Just like their previous two meetings, their quarterfinal encounter in Barcelona had all the ingredients to be called an epic. Following their three clashes on the tour, an intriguing rivalry seems to be brewing between the two. The pressure was simply too much for Tsitsipas to handle as he engaged in a heated argument with the chair umpire during his clash against the Spaniard. The Greek, who had initially gone to complaint, soon turned raging as his complaint was denied.

Tsitsipas indulges in an argument with the chair umpire

One set all, both players seemed dialed in to give their all in the deciding set. However, during one of the changeovers in the third set, Alcaraz opted to take a bathroom break. Tsitsipas approached the umpire, asserting that Alcaraz is taking too long in the washroom. However, the chair umpire opted to deny the allegation, not giving much attention to it.

Seeing the umpire’s reaction, Tsitsipas soon turned outrageous, putting himself in a heated argument with the umpire. However, things got ugly when Tsitsipas outrageously said, ““If you are wrong, you should be fired.”

The reaction came in possibly because of the point penalties given to the Greek prior to this incident. World No. 5 was penalized for changing his t-shirt too slowly during the changeover. Apart from that, being 0-3 down in the third set, he also took an excessively long pause. The result? He started the 4th game at 0-30.

In front of a pro-Alcaraz crowd, the home hope didn’t disappoint his fans as he produced breathtaking tennis to prevail over Tsitsipas in three sets. Carlos Alcaraz defeated Tsitsipas 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in 2 hours and 12 minutes on Pista Rafa Nadal to reach his fourth semifinal this season.

After winning the opening set 6-4, Alcaraz secured two breaks of serves to tighten his hold on the contest. However, refusing to yield, Tsitsipas showed tremendous resilience to turn the tide back in his favor to win the second set 7-5.

The deciding set was a different story though as the young Greek ran out of steam. The set started with Alcaraz taking an early 3-0 lead. And after his heated argument with the chair umpire, Tsitsipas struggled to find his focus back, crumbling 2-6 in the deciding set.

Alcaraz will now lock horns against Alex De Minaur in an exciting semifinal in Barcelona on Saturday.
