In an interview with PEOPLE, the Oscar winner, who has been struggling with drug addiction, revealed how an overdose in 2020 left her with a six-week coma and an inability to speak. During that phase, everyone around her was scared as they had no idea whether she could speak or walk again following her coma.
Even her kids, Kevin and Emily, had no anticipation whether the actress will get through that adverse phase. Notably, her son Kevin said, “I was worried she might be like a vegetable.”
However, they were amazed to see their mother’s sheer resilience and determination after she was diagnosed with aphasia, an injury to her brain that left her with the inability to speak. Taking note of the same, Kevin also said, “But I just thought the fighter in her was overcoming some of this stuff.”
Now, the 59-year-old actress is ardently working on regular speech therapy after waking up from the coma. Even her daughter, Emily, hailed her by saying, “She’s an unbelievable survivor.”
Apart from all this, the American actress’ kids have also lauded her for embarking on the new sobriety path.

However, the Paper Moon actress has now made the decision to stop taking drugs and has since taken a sobriety road. Notably, her kids, including Sean McEnroe, revealed how they are supportive of their mother’s decision. It also delighted them to see her resilience during such an adverse phase.
