American tennis star John McEnroe was one of the best tennis players of his time. The 63-year-old was popular equally for his game and aggressive on-court behavior. However, in the twilight of his career, McEnroe had to face various hardships concerning his personal life and family.
Today, when mental health is one of the most discussed aspects of any sport, the problems existed earlier as well and former players come up with their stories of struggle.

Recently, McEnroe appeared on a podcast where he discussed various aspects of his career and life. When asked about the attitude of not letting the loss affect you, the 63-year-old recalled the dark days of his life.
John McEnroe opens up about the tough days
McEnroe remembered how he was not in good mental shape after separating from his ex-wife.“The experience of going through the separation and divorce in the end of my career that was overwhelming to say the least. I was sort of lost at that time,” he said.
Further, the 63-year-old explained how he never left trying new things to get the peace back.
“I kept myself opening to trying and exploring things that hopefully would help me find myself, eventually. Because you sort of live it the way like you win, you feel good as a person. You lose, you feel lousy about yourself. And obviously, that’s not a very healthy way to live,” he added.
McEnroe on having a lonely childhood
John McEnroe was a volatile character in his playing days. However, contrastingly, he had a very lonely life growing up. In an interview, the former world number 1 recalled his teenage days. He said that as a teenager he used to commute a long distance to school. This way, he was devoid of bonding with his school friends and the local friends.

However, his life changed when he started playing professional tennis. Now he was able to form friendships and also played with a team.
