Of all the Grand Slams titles won by Novak Djokovic, the 2011 US Open sits right on top of the pile. It was a monumental achievement as he managed to cruise past a prime Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in back-to-back encounters. Beating your two biggest rivals en route to a slam title is always going to be special. However, a certain Swiss Maestro, uncharacteristically, tried to undermine his rival’s feat.

After the loss, the 20-time Grand Slam champion was completely heartbroken. He refused to acknowledge Djokovic for his victory and considered him lucky. Federer focused on a particular moment of the match where he felt that he was hard done.

The match was pretty close to a rollercoaster ride. Federer won the first two sets, and Djokovic the next two. In the decider, Federer was up 5-3 40-15 on his serve. He hit a slice serve, to which the Serb replied with a cross-court forehand return winner. The Djoker then looked to the crowd and raised his arms. To this date, it goes down as one of the most iconic moments in tennis as Djokovic went on to win the fifth set 7-5.

It was a hard pill to swallow for Federer, and his frustration was visible in the press conference. According to The Guardian, he said, “I feel like I should be doing the other press conference.” Federer believed the Serb did not appear like someone “who believes much anymore in winning. To lose against someone like that, it’s very disappointing because you feel like he was mentally out of it already. Just gets the lucky shot at the end, and off you go.

To Federer’s misery, it was not the first, nor the last time, he lost from that position against Novak Djokovic in a Slam.
