One of the most iconic sights from Wimbledon in recent memory has to be Novak Djokovic’s grass-eating ritual on Centre Court after his championship victories. And this is unlikely to be seen anywhere else apart from Centre Court, as revealed by Djokovic himself.

Over the years, Novak Djokovic has made it a tradition to eat the Center Court grass at Wimbledon after winning the title. This year, Djokovic took part in the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic Exhibition Event prior to the start of his Wimbledon campaign, as he faced American Frances Tiafoe at the Hurlingham Club. Djokovic defeated Tiafoe 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 in a highly entertaining 3-set thriller. Following this victory, the Serb was asked whether he would taste the grass from the Hurlingham Club Court, reports the Daily Express. A smiling Djokovic came up with a cheeky reply, “I only eat Wimbledon grass.”

Wimbledon certainly ranks as one of Djokovic’s favorite stomping grounds. He has won the event in its last 4 editions, with his last defeat at the All England Club coming way back in 2017. He hopes to win a record-equaling 8th Wimbledon title this year, which will make him the most decorated Wimbledon men’s singles player alongside long-time rival Roger Federer. Therefore, it is obvious why the grass at Wimbledon tastes extra sweet for the Serb.?

Djokovic first tasted Wimbledon grass in 2011

Djokovic’s famous grass-eating saga at Centre Court started after his four-set victory against defending champion Rafael Nadal at the 2011 Wimbledon final. Fans were shocked to see him pick up and eat a handful of the grass from the turf after this victory. Reminiscing about this moment, Djokovic said, “I didn’t know what to do from the emotions that I had at that moment. It was an incredible feeling so the tasting of the grass came spontaneously. It tasted really good!”
