The 2022 French Open has tested every player in terms of both mental and physical strength. On one hand, some high-caliber players such as Stan Wawrinka suffered a first-round exit while on the other, players such as Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud have shone. However, the red dirt took down one of the top contenders for the title, Alexander Zverev, in the semifinals.

The German tennis ace suffered a gruesome injury while battling the 21-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal for a place in the final. He rolled his ankle while playing a shot and crumbled to the floor in pain. Eventually, Zverev had to retire, much to the disappointment of the fans.

The German recently took to social media to give exact information about his injury. He shared a picture of himself leaving France and wrote, “Hey guys! I am now on my way back home. Based on the first medical checks, it looks like I have torn several lateral ligaments in my right foot. I will be flying to Germany on Monday to make further examinations and to determine the best and quickest way for me to recover.”

Thereafter, he added, “I want to thank everyone all over the world for the kind messages that I have received since yesterday. Your support means a lot to me right now! And many thanks to my friends from Goodwill private aviation for taking such good care of me in the given circumstances.”
Also, he assured his fan about being in touch. Zverev said, “I will try to keep you updated as much as possible on further developments.” The current World No.3 lost the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(8) and was looking strong in the second set before the unfortunate incident.

Zverev started his season from the very first clay-court event, the Monte Carlo Masters. He made it up to the semifinals where the Greek star, Stefanos Tsitsipas, got the better of him in straight sets. The German then tested himself in the red dirt of Madrid where the 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz snatched the title from his hands in the last round.
Following that, he stepped on to the courts of Rome. Where Tsitsipas took him down again in the semifinals. Though this time around, Zverev managed to extend the match till the third set.

At the French Open, Zverev’s promising campaign was unfortunately cut short by the injury. However, his fans will be hoping he can recover as quickly as possible.
