Andy Murray has unfortunately not been in a great position in his career as he was prior to 2017. The Briton used to rank in the top five constantly and even became a part of the tennis big four. Sadly, several injuries over the period of the last six years have served to reduce his form quite a bit. Fit as a fiddle before, Murray now encounters physical issues when playing. Recently at the Canadian Open, Murray announced his withdrawal which could threaten his participation in the US Open.

This is not the first time Murray has given a walkover close to a match. At the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships, Murray was set to participate in a blazing form. But a hip injury forced him to give his first-round opponent a walkover. Fans have now seen another exit prior to an anticipated match at another Masters tournament.

Demolishing his opponents in his first two bouts, Murray entered the round of 16 with hopes high. Scoring a bagel against Lorenzo Sonego and a fight to quash a comeback against Max Purcell, Murray was set to play in great form. Unfortunately, he could not compete in the bout he had set up with Jannik Sinner. Before the match could begin, the Briton addressed the crowd while announcing his walkover.

I have an issue with my abdominal, so; unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to play this evening. I’m really sorry,” Murray said, addressing the crowd. “I feel like I’ve let you down. I’ve rarely been in this situation in my career, and I feel terrible.”

A few weeks ahead of the US Open, a prolonged injury could prove to disrupt his stint. Winning the slam in New York once in 2012, Murray’s return to Arthur Ashe Stadium is always anticipated. His current form could’ve taken him far. A fan favorite, his recovery process will be imperative to ensure he plays the slam.

The three-time Canadian Open champion was upset at letting his fans down, given the possibility that it could be his last appearance in Montreal. This is just the seventh time Murray has given a walkover in his career. Of the seven walkovers he has given, one occurred during another Masters tournament this year.
