After being out of the tour for 10 months, Dominic Thiem finally made a comeback on the ATP tour at the ATP 250 Serbia Open. The Austrian started his tournament campaign against John Millman, a player he had beaten three times previously in his career. Lacking match experience, Thiem suffered a hard-fought loss to the Australian.

However, despite the loss, Thiem received immense love and warmth for his outstanding comeback performance.

Thiem’s message after his comeback match

Millman won the match. However, the victory didn’t come that easy. The 2-hour and 33 mins long battle witnessed both players indulging in some high-intensity game. While Thiem eyed a comeback victory along with taking his win streak further, Millman on the other hand, eyed revenge for his three previous losses.

Post the match, Thiem took to his Instagram, uploading a post. In the post, Thiem expressed his feelings towards his match against Millman. The Australian admitted that things didn’t go as planned for him in the match. However, he also confessed that he was happy playing a circuit match after months.

Giving an update about his current health condition, the former World No. 3 ended by thanking his fans for their support.

His post read, “Today was a day that didn’t go as planned, but it was still positive! I didn’t start the match today with high expectations, but as always I gave everything I could. When I was on the court, I was very happy, to be honest. It was a challenge and it was a real match. And that’s what I’ve been aiming for over the past few months.”

Dominic Thiem in his comeback match against Millman

Millman last played at the Monte Carlo Open, suffering a first-round loss. On the other hand, Thiem last played at the ATP 250 Mallorca Open, suffering a right wrist injury in the first round.

Entering the Serbia Open, the first set started with Millman taking an early lead, breaking Thiem in his 2nd service game. However, Thiem broke Millman in the very next service game. However, not willing to go down, Millman again broke Thiem’s serve, winning the set 6-3.

Having a one-set lead, Millman looked strong to take the lead ahead. However, making a strong comeback, Thiem raised his game in the second set. Breaking Millman in his second service game, taking a 3-1 lead. Maintaining the difference, he went on to win the set 6-3.

One set all, both players looked in good touch to win the match. Not willing to go back early, both players kicked off the final set in full form. Not leaving any room for error, both the players held their serve, taking the set to 4-4. Going ahead, Millman continued his high-performance game, holding his service game.

However, it was Millman who took the advantage in Thiem’s last service game, breaking him to win the set 6-4. He won the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
