However, recently in an interview, Rafael Nadal opened up about his relationship with fellow tennis legend Roger Federer where he ended up sharing an upsetting detail.

During a chat with Movistar Plus+ on September 18, Nadal got real about his friendship with Federer. It turns out that despite their fame, there have been missed opportunities for them to connect on a personal level. His candid admission shows that even superstar athletes sometimes wish for more meaningful interactions in their lives beyond the tennis court.

In the interview, Nadal confessed: “Federer’s children have come to train at my academy, but I couldn’t see them. My son hasn’t picked up a racquet yet”. This news about Nadal not being able to see Federer’s twin boys came out just days after Federer shared the news that his twin boys went to the Rafa Nadal Academy to learn tennis. Meanwhile, his twin daughters went to the John McEnroe Tennis Academy. “They were up at (John) McEnroe Academy in East Hampton, and the boys were in Mallorca at the (Rafael Nadal) camp for a couple of days;” Federer shared with the Wall Street Journal.

In the same interview, Nadal also touched upon the loneliness he sometimes feels on the ATP tour, attributing it to the generation gap that separates him from his peers. “On the circuit, I don’t have many friends left; I’m from another generation. I talk to Federer every now and then,” he confided. Despite the missed opportunities to forge a stronger bond, Federer and Nadal are still are still good friends. Apart from his feelings about friendship, the interview also touched on Nadal’s hopes for a comeback in tennis.

While fans hold out hope for another successful run at Grand Slam titles, the Spaniard took a more realistic approach and set the bar a little low for himself. “Yes, I would like to play again and be competitive again, but the dream is not to come back and win Roland Garros or win Australia, so that people don’t get confused, right? I am very aware that at the time I am in my life, all that is very far away,” he reflected.
