Matteo Berrettini recently dropped heartbreaking news for his fans. The Italian player had a smashing start to the grass-court season; he won the Queen’s Club Championship by defeating Filip Krajinovic.

However, the 2021 runner-up has withdrawn from the Wimbledon 2022 following his confirmation of contacting the COVID-19. The fans will miss the world no. 11, who displayed grear potential throughout the season.

Matteo Berrettini took to his Instagram to convey the news of his withdrawal from the Wimbledon 2022. He has been diagnosed with COVID-19, and the Italian player has decided to withdraw to recover from it. Moreover, this will ensure its safety from other players who can participate in the tour safely.

World no. 11 stated, “Verified. I am heartbroken to announce that I need to withdraw from @wimbledon due to a positive COVID-19 test result. I have had flu symptoms and been isolating the last few days. Despite symptoms not being severe, I decided it was important to take another test this morning to protect the health and safety of my fellow competitors and everyone else involved in the tournament.”

Berrettini was one of the top favorites for the Wimbledon Championships 2022. He further stated, “I have no words to describe the extreme disappointed I feel. The dream is over for this year, but I will be back stronger. Thank you for the support.”

Who else has withdrawn from the Wimbledon 2022?

After recovering from his injury and making a comeback, the player has performed extremely well. He won his first tournament at the Stuttgart Open and continued his form till the Indian Wells 2022.

However, he then had to undergo surgery on his right hand. Consequently, this made the Italian player miss the whole clay-court season, including the French Open.

But Berrettini is not the first player to withdraw. To the much disappointment of the fans, the Croatian tennis player Marin Cilic has also withdrawn from the grass court major.
