Earlier today, there were encouraging signs for local fans as they caught glimpses of Berrettini practicing before his second group stage match against Hubert Hurkacz.

Matteo Berrettini updates his ATP Finals status through Instagram

Hours before the match starts, the Italian took to Instagram to express his disappointment over missing a golden opportunity to excel in-front of his home-crowd.

I thought, thought, cried, and finally decided. My finals end here. I am destroyed. I never thought I would have to give up the most important tennis event ever held in Italy in this way”, wrote Matteo.

Clearly, Berrettini was disgusted to have end the tournament this way. It was an unexpected injury to have happened on-court. But, the Italian also faced a similar issue earlier this year at the Australian Open.

In a lengthy post, the Italian continued, “The truth is that as much as I wanted to play in-front of you once again, I felt and therefore decided that my body is not ready to face the challenges that lie ahead”.

Berrettini had an eventful ATP season this year

From these words, it’s abundantly evident that Berrettini didn’t want to have to push his abdominal injury to an extent where it becomes fatal. It’s good that the Italian decided to take an off season in-order to make a stronger impact at the season-opener in Australia next year.

The 2021 ATP season has been a revelation for Matteo Berrettini as he managed to reach at-least the round of 16 at all four Grand Slam events and clinched two titles(Cinch Championships and Belgrade).

The withdrawal of Berrettini gives opportunity to another young Italian Jannik Sinner who entered the event as a primary alternate. He will now take over his compatriot’s place and this is an even-bigger chance for Sinner as he will be playing his first-ever ATP Finals in-front of his home-crowd.
