The interest of Saudis surrounding tennis is growing at a fast pace. While some players are opposing it, some are welcoming the interest with open arms. So much so, that the Saudis recently expressed their desire to buy the ATP rankings. This is something that has left many puzzled and even Andy Roddick could not escape this. Just when things seemed puzzling, popular tennis journalist, Jon Wertheim stepped in to shed some light.

In a recent podcast, Wertheim hinted at an upcoming move by the Saudis involving money talks and the ATP. The twist? It’s not just only about sponsorships, it’s about buying into the rankings system itself.

In a recent tennis chat, Andy Roddick and Jon Wertheim discussed Saudi Arabia’s influence on the sport. However, Roddick was left puzzled by reports of Saudi Arabia’s deal with the ATP, involving the sovereign wealth fund, PIF. Wethiem hinted at an upcoming announcement where PIF might secure sponsorships, even impacting the ATP and WTA.

“Yeah, I have a good source telling me there’s going to be a forthcoming announcement where the PIF, the Saudi sovereign wealth fund is going to be making this deal with the ATP and then presumably soon thereafter, the WTA, where it’s basically buying these levels of sponsorship, and one of them includes essentially buying the rights, I guess you could say buying the rankings,” said Wertheim in the podcast.

The big surprise? The potential purchase of not just sponsorships but the rights to rankings themselves. However, after listening to this, Roddick couldn’t wrap his head around “buying math” and questioned if a set algorithm could be altered.

“I’m trying to figure out like how you buy I said, How do you buy math? I guess the Saudis have figured out how to even buy math. I don’t I don’t understand. It’s a set algorithm. Like it’s a set ranking system. So it’s basically just what every time we say the ATP rankings we say the ATP, PIF rankings, like, what does this look?” said Roddick while questioning how could Saudis buy math.
