Did Sophia Thomalla's support save Alexander Zverev's career? How important is a partner's role in recovery?

For most athletes, injuries are like the weather – they come and go. But sometimes the damage caused could be so severe that it threatens the career of an athlete. Alexander Zverev escaped this fate in the nick of time and perseverance back in 2022. The German star made a stronger-than-ever comeback, with the support of his partner, Sophia Thomalla. Her crucial effort to getting him back on track might just make you emotional!

The 2022 French Open is certainly famous for Rafael Nadal’s 14th Grand Slam glory on the clay court. However, his then-semi-final opponent, Zverev, would remember it for all the different reasons. A career-threatening injury! In the intensive battle for the final sport, Zverev battled the ‘King of Clay’ for over 3 hours. However, before the completion of the 2nd set, Zverev was down on the clay, holding his ankle with eyes closed in angst and pain.

Marking an end to his clay swing as well as the 2022 calendar year. The injury resulted in several torn lateral ligaments in his right foot. And the recovery was not easy, as Zverev stayed away from the tennis court for almost 6 months.

Back in an interview in 2023, Zverev opened up about his time off the court during recovery. “The injury changed me,” he claimed. But Thomalla helped Zverev taste the other aspects of life: “She (Sophia) gave me a chance to realize there’s a lot more out there than tennis.”

This can be seen from their very few snippets shared by Zverev on his Instagram account as they chill around at pool, or beach. Something positive came out of a negative moment for the German star.

“I think for tennis players it is always very important who you have next to you. Sophia is someone who gives me peace and security,” the German tennis star said in December 2021. “I play extremely well with her behind me and I hope that will continue to be the case next year and maybe even better. I haven’t achieved all of my goals yet.”
