After attaining a career-high rank of four, things haven’t gone the way Holger Rune would’ve liked. The Danish tennis sensation had a wonderful 2023 season, having a consistent run across tournaments. Additionally, he also reached a couple of Masters 1000 finals. However, things have taken a turn for the worse since then. With a loss of form, Rune has also had major changes to his coaching team. American tennis legend, Andy Roddick, reasoned out the split between the Dane and his coaches.
Within a span of a few days, Rune ended his partnership with both of his coaches, Severin Luthi and Boris Becker. It came as a shock to the tennis world, given that the Danish star was one of the top players on the tour. Although Roddick himself expressed shock about this, he also understood the reason behind this split.

While Becker split with Rune citing other responsibilities, Luthi’s split with Rune came just a few months after they had begun their partnership. With inconsistent performances, all was not going well in the team and the split was finally announced earlier this year.

Talking on this subject, Roddick said, “Rune is a top-ten player, he’s working with Becker, you want that expertise. It takes away that yes-man kind of mentality in the relationship. You get a quick read when things are going to get down when someone doesn’t need you.”
Further, he went on to add, “The fact that he’s had three-four different coaches tells that something is difficult behind the scenes. It seems like a bit of a mess.”
Like Becker, Luthi is a top coach who had stints with the likes of Roger Federer. Moments after Luthi’s split with Rune, the latter’s mother shared a major regret about their partnership.

Rune’s mother on her son’s coaching situation
The Danish sensation’s mother felt that it was a mistake to hire a world-famous coach too early in his career. As a result, she made a candid confession surrounding this issue.
She said, “Maybe also we were a little naive and also a little you know, starstruck, like saying, oh, Roger 20 grand slams, it’s not a problem to bring in a new coach. Clearly, this was naive. But, you know, as I said, you can always be wise looking back.”
