Even in his late 30s, Novak Djokovic‘s tennis powers are showing no sign of diminishing, given his phenomenal season. Just after marking a record seventh triumph at the ATP Finals in Turin, the Serbian tennis player was there at the Davis Cup for his national duties. Djokovic’s devotion and vigorous support for his country have now prompted the tennis community to make some big assertions about his patriotism.

In another extraordinary season, the 36-year-old clinched three Grand Slams along with some Masters 1000 titles. However, despite experiencing a remarkable yet hectic season, the ‘Djoker’ didn’t forget about his national duties, which have now earned him a special ‘patriot’ tag.

An esteemed tennis journalist hails Novak Djokovic in a unique way

In the latest episode of the ‘Tennis Channel Inside-In’ podcast show, the renowned journalist Chris Oddo talked about the Serbian Davis Cup team’s semifinal finish at the premier international team event. Meanwhile, Oddo lauded Novak Djokovic for being there for his country after a hectic campaign at the season-ending championship.

Oddo said, “And look, he’s 36. It was a long season, it was expected that he that he run into some turbulence, I think it was amazing that he was still there after winning the ATP finals still being in the Davis Cup.”

While hailing the 24-time singles Grand Slam champion for diligently keeping up with his national duties on a number of occasions, Oddo labeled him a ‘true patriot sky’. He added, “And you know, he’s done that on numerous occasions just gutted it out for Serbia. He’s a true patriot sky.” 

During the conversation, the tennis journalist also opened up about how Djokovic paved the path for Serbia’s first international triumph.

Oddo on Novak Djokovic’s crucial contribution to Serbia’s Davis Cup win

Back in 2010, the Serbia Davis Cup team experienced their maiden title-winning run at the premier international team event. With his crucial victories in the singles matches against the likes of Gael Monfils, Djokovic made a significant contribution to his country’s 3-2 win against France.

Reminiscing about the Serb’s Davis Cup triumph in 2010, Oddo touted the ‘Djoker’ to win another international title in the next season. He said, “And it’s like, you know, he didn’t win at all. He didn’t get it for Serbia, but he’s got that 2010, that life changing Davis Cup win. And who knows, they may win it again next year.”
