Another stellar US Open run is in the works. With 2021’s Flushing Meadows, champion Daniil Medvedev finds his second Grand Slam tantalizingly close. Having decimated a tame Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal, it goes without saying that he aims to recreate his 2021 triumph. But one crucial factor in his success is the constant support of his family, especially his wife, Daria Medvedeva. “She gave me a lot of confidence,” he once said.

As Daniil Medvedev prepares to take on a formidable and top-form Novak Djokovic in the rematch of their US Open 2021 Final, Daria’s support seems crucial. Throughout his impeccable run in the year’s final Grand Slam, Daria Medvedeva has been his rock through rain and shine – and with the weather in New York, the humidity too!

Like her husband, Daria too hails from Moscow. When they were youngsters training for competitive tennis together, Daniil Medvedev met his future fiancée.

In a cafe next to their local tennis courts, a 12-year-old Daria heard the crash of a racket thrown. Someone nearby explained to the curious young girl and her mother, “It’s Medvedev playing. You don’t know him?” They went to watch the three-and-a-half-hour match that ensued and sealed their fates.

Years later, Daria would recount the man who became her husband, “He used to fight till the end. He was prepared to do anything on court, no matter how ugly his game may look, in order to win. In this sense, he hasn’t changed at all.”

Medvedev’s wife played tennis too!

Like her husband, Daria too played tennis growing up and was training to turn professional. But fate had something else in store for her. Plagued by injuries, she bid adieu to the sport at the age of 18. However, the end of a shared career hardly meant the end of their love. In fact, it made their bond even stronger.

She played tennis until she was 17 or 18, but because of injuries she couldn’t reach the desired level,” Medvedev told The Sun UK in an exclusive interview. He continued, Nevertheless, it’s great that she understands tennis… Perhaps it’s not easy to get used to it when you don’t understand anything in tennis. It helped me to become better as a person and a player.”

Moving on with her life, Daria went on to pursue a career in journalism, enrolling in the Moscow State Institute of International Relations or MGIMO, before traveling to Monte Carlo to live with Medvedev. The couple still continue to reside in Monaco till date.

“She’s one of the most important members of my team,” Medvedev admitted in a press conference in Washington, according to ‘Express UK’. He further added, “She gave me a lot of confidence. I always say that it’s the moment I made the proposal to her, that’s when I started to go up. It was at this moment – it was after Wimbledon – I was, I think, 65 or something like this, and at the end of the year, I was already 15.”

Daniil Medvedev and Daria chose Andrey Rublev as the Godfather

Andrey Rublev was chosen as Alisa’s godfather because of the bond Rublev and Daniil share. “We’re really close. I don’t like to, let’s say, label ‘best friend’ because I would say I have a lot of best friends, I have a lot of good friends,” Medvedev said. He further added, “But we are very close. He’s very kind. He’s religious, so that’s important to be a godfather. So it was kind of an easy decision, yeah.”

Daniil Medvedev’s incredible career post 2020

If you were to go by the numbers, you would believe Medvedev when he says that his wife has brought him luck. The Russian tennis star had an incredible 2020 season following his breakthrough in 2019.

In the two years, he won six titles, including three Masters 1000 tournaments and the ATP Finals. He ended the 2020 season as World No. 4 with two consecutive titles and a 10-match winning streak.

Daniil continued at his peak in 2021 as well, extending his run of wins to 20 matches and a third straight title. He finished as a runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, which ended his streak. He followed it up with a quarterfinal appearance in the French Open.
