Carlos Alcaraz faced Alexander Zverev in his first-round bout in the ATP Finals. Many thought he would win and move on to the second round. He won the first set after much struggle. However, Zverev was not done.
The German player shifted into the next gear and won the next two sets in blazing fashion. Alcaraz was despondent after his loss. Daniil Medvedev, who won his bout against Andrey Rublev, was asked why he believed Alcaraz lost in his first match.
He said, “If you would ask me two, three months ago, for sure. Tennis is very, very tricky sport. At this moment, for whatever reason, we feel that Carlos plays just a little bit slower. He doesn’t have the same confidence he had throughout the whole year. This can happen to everyone. This even happen to Novak when he was younger. The question is, how fast is he going to recover. Is it going to be this tournament or next year.”
Along with the reasons for Alcaraz slowing down and not amassing a similar level of confidence, Alcaraz also talked about Zverev, who played fantastically against him.

Zverev came back in the second set and won the third set as well to seal his victory against the Wimbledon champ. Medvedev followed the match intently and was impressed by the show put on by the German star. After his win against Rublev, Medvedev talked about the fantastic performance Zverev displayed to take the win.
“When he lost the second set, they showed the speed of the strokes, groundstrokes. Sascha was like 10 kilometers higher than Carlos. This is very surprising. In general when I saw the match, in the beginning we felt that Carlos is not playing his best. Sascha also. So I’m not surprised at all. In the end it turned out to be a great fight and a great match. No surprises. Sascha can play well also, serve well.”
